Navigating your first day

Welcome to the field! Here are some helpful tips and rules that will have you navigate your first day training with us!

Training Day Essentials

Practical steps and etiquette guidelines to help handlers and their versatile dogs prepare for a successful session in the field.

What to Expect
  • Pre-order birds by noon the day before
  • Say Hello! Get to know the team.
  • We typically start early to get through everyone. 
  • Sign up on the white board. It's typically first come first run.​
Safety First
  • All shotguns must be break open
  • Dogs must be under control
  • Remain out of the field unless working your dog or assisting
  • Dogs can break - be alert when gunning​
Handler Etiquette
  • Dogs must remain leashed or kenneled or under control
  • Respect the grounds – clean up fully
  • If you did not order birds - do not take birds until everyone who ordered go theirs
  • Priority is always given to safety protocols
Gear & Bird Prep
  • Bird bag: you will need a way to hold your birds before you run.
  • Fresh water: both for handler and dog
Volunteer - It's the best way to learn

The best way to learn and get to know the members is to offer to help! 

Ask someone to show you how to plant a bird or do a drag! 

Mentor Support

New handlers can be paired with section mentors. Reach out before training day to discuss your dog’s level and testing goals. Our mentor coordinators will pair you up with a member.

Aggressive Dog Policy

Any dog deemed to be aggressive by the majority of the Executive Board will be banned from all Finger Lakes NAVHDA Activities. The Owner/Handler will be allowed to participate in chapter activities if they have other dogs. If the actions of the Owner/Handler are deemed to be detrimental or lacking integrity, they will be expelled with no refunds of any associated fees.

This will be addressed on a case-by-case basis as aggressive actions & situations can vary.

If a dog is deemed to be aggressive NAVHDA will be notified.

Code of Conduct Policy

Actions taken by a member that are deemed to be detrimental to the club will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Discipline can vary from verbal, written, suspension, and expulsion. Discipline will be at the discretion of the executive board.

ANY ANIMAL ABUSE at any time will result in immediate expulsion.

Re-admittance would be at the discretion of the executive board.
